Social Issue Theatre When Safe House Productions performs an interactive social issues theatrical presentation, the school or group need only gather students and give a short introduction. The performers and moderators will introduce the program, tell the audience what type of participation is needed through clear instructions, and improvise from an outline the type and length of program desired. Throughout the program, action may be ‘frozen’ by the moderator, and the audience has an opportunity to comment on what is happening correctly and incorrectly, propose fixes which the performers can improvise, and then comment on how those proposed fixes have worked. Performers stay true to their characters and situations, and won’t allow the ‘pat’ or standard answers to necessarily affect the situation positively, encouraging audience members to think more deeply to truly gain an understanding of how a variety of factors, including varying personality types, backgrounds, and life situations can cause a negative situation and that true creative problem solving is often needed to work through conflicts and problems. Safe House Productions differs from many social issues theatre troupes in that a positive approach is brought to even the most serious issues. Students have fun and laugh while seeing the issues they deal with every day brought to life before them, giving them a new way to approach the types of problems that often do not have any easy answer. Participation becomes non-threatening and approachable for even very shy or “too cool” students because the atmosphere is kept encouraging, positive, and free of standard right and wrong judgments. Creative Dramatics Safe House Productions offers Creative Dramatics workshops for all ages, preschool through adult! Creative Dramatics is a process centered program appropriate for all, not just performers. During Creative Dramatics Workshops, students participate in and learn from improvisational theatre exercises. Creative Dramatics teaches ensemble work, which encourages both the shy and the boisterous to collaborate. Creative Dramatics can be used to teach any curriculum, including team building and character education, in addition to items included in Indiana’s Academic Standards. Acting Workshops Acting coaching, lessons, classes, and workshops are available for all levels of experience from amateur to professional. A variety of methods are available including those from Meisner, Stanislavsky, Viola Spolin, and more. Both general and specified programs are available, including Shakesperean and Classical Acting, Movement for the Theatre, Improvisational Acting, Scene Study, Monologues and Audition Skills, and many more. Programs which culminate in a performance, either improvised, self-written scripted, or from a published script, both plays and musicals, are available.
