On January 9, 2008 the Greenwood Parks and Recreation Board approved this exciting project, as well as committed up to $10,000 in matching funds from the recreation budget to bring professional live Shakespeare to the Surina Park Amphitheater! Safe House Productions Founded in 2004 by a group of theatre veterans, Safe House Productions, Inc. became an alternative to other social issues groups in that their goal is to bring serious issues and theatre education to students and adults through an upbeat and fun presentation. Seeing positivity as a missing element to many social issues theatre presentations, a company of improvisational actors, theatre educators, and comedy writers set out to begin bringing a different kind of theatre presentations to schools, offices, churches, and organizations. Since incorporating in 2004, Safe House Productions has brought its own brand of educational presentations to over 50,000 children throughout the Midwest, many in low income and under served areas. Issues like body image, respect for authority, bullying and friendship issues, saying ‘no’ to drugs, and more are brought before students in a way they have not heard so many times, but in an unusual and fun way. Creative Dramatics and Acting workshops help even shy students build confidence and begin to shine. As a Non-Profit 501 (c) (3) organization, Safe House Productions has kept their rates low enough to be accessible to almost any group, and offers funding assistance in the way of finding grants, donations and sponsorships. And touring with NCAA’s Stay In Bounds Program and Radio Disney’s Character Traits Education Program has given the Company the opportunity to reach many more children, often at little or no cost to the school or organization.
